Seeing Further

First day of school

Today was interesting. We had orientation day at PUC (Pontificia Universidade Catolica). 9 AM bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for school. After five days of boozing capirinhas and chopp (brasilian draft) this was no simple task, I can assure you. The Brasilian equivalent to the Hurricane, Caipirinhas are a national treasure throughout Brasil bordering on obsession. I think if we could somehow settle wars by boozing the opposing country’s national drink and then seeing how bad the hangovers went over on the opposing army; Brasil would be the thermonuclear-powerhouse-captain-of-the-team-off-the-top-of-the-turnbuckle champion of the world.

Imagine a drink made from the flammable liquor of the sugar cane then toss in a kilo of sugar, a few limes and god knows what else, get the picture? Anyway, after Witzy pumped me full of Brazilian coffee we stumbled into a cab and headed to PUC. After navigating our way through the PUC campus we found ourselves in the RDC auditorium subjected to the comedy stylings of Linda Souza, Bira & Dr. Sandra. All jokes aside, once our comedy team settled in they managed to impart a few spare nuggets of wisdom. I can summarize: Don’t take drugs, Brasilian prisons are scary, Stay OUT of the Favelas, Brasilians like to touch so don’t be offended (I could make a joke but it’s just too base, let your mind do the wandering on that one), and lastly something about a test in the morning for portuguese placement. Perfect, I am set, can we hit the beach now. NO, AND for my neurotic obsessive compulsive boon companion, a question and answer session appreciably extended by the inane questions of the moronic American contingent. Yes kids, the phones do call international from Rio! I only managed to grasp a measure of sanity because I was too worried I wet myself laughing at Witz pulling his hair out during the Q&A. Fortunately for Witzy’s follici we had to miss the campus tour because of a prior engagement with our attorneys downtown. We head to Buzios for the weekend to check out land and pousadas. OMG Witz behind the wheel of a tiny car in Brasil. Nightmares do come true.
