Seeing Further

In the moment of the meantime

Set against the backdrop of a city poised to explode in anticipation, Rio’s samba school rehearsals have taken on new fervor as Carnavale draws near. Similar to a New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe, the samba school plays a central role in Carnavale festivities. Months before the actual carnavale, samba schools hold rehearsals to hone member samba skills and familiarize parade participants with parade routines. In an effort to raise funds and recruit new members these rehearsals are open to the general public. Approaching the samba school, the deafening cadence of the samba school bateria or drum corps can be heard for miles. Brazilians love to eat, drink and carouse with friends (bater um bom popo they call it) so why should the occasion for a rehearsal be any different. Rest assured your editors fell right in step with Brazilian tradition imbibing, gormandizing and generally making a nuisance of ourselves on the samba floor.
